Who is not without a goal? Types of Goal setters
Who is not without a goal? All of our actions, are one or the other ways preceded by a goal. These goals are some times hidden or secret, sometimes are open or known. Goals camouflage in objectives, tasks , plans etc. Whatever may be the type of reasons ones ultimate executioner is your goal. A goal can be shorter, medium, longer or intermediate. But, a goal is a goal. Many do not think that goal must be achievable. A goal set with doubt or partial commitment is a waste of one’s precious time. Difficulty may arise in marching towards achieving goals. Fixing a target is an easy task. What about achieving the same. Let us understand goal setting with following types in it.
Pseudo Goal Setter: These goal setters are at their early childhood. Here, the persons involved are not real goal setters. Others will set goals for them. Parents are an apt example. When a child is borne they set their child’s goal. This is evident when they say my child is a Doctor or Engineer. Parents even designate a specific subject that the child should take up in the future. They simply didn’t know how serious this is. Can you imagine the danger here for the new borne? How can simply a child’s target be set without even educating on the relevant facts?
Can you imagine a solution for the above scenario? If not, this can be one of the few solutions. Parents can wait and see children grow and watch their interest. If they want to take a child towards a designated goal, they can guide the child on the same. It would be better if the parents give that particular child an atmosphere where designated goal is represented. For example, if a child needs to be groomed to become a Charted Accountant, parents can give exposure to the child a basic calculation and reasoning. In the earliest stage, they can educate the child using chart, display etc.
Young Goal setter: Persons who fall under pre-college. These goal setters are young. Their normal age group is 10 years to 18 Years. In the first example a person wants wants to become a scientist and she has her favorite subject as History and likes to do art work during her free time. Many do not give due importance to a basic analysis on a comparison between what they wanted to become and what is their interested subject. It is very important to go by ones favorite subject if they wanted to become of their dream job. This is where parents play an important. We have seen what happens during admission to either higher secondary or under graduation. Parents force students to take subject other than what the concerned students like. This happens due to various factors like peer pressure, job marker etc. The irony is that even educated parents tend to pressurize their children to take up unwanted subject.
As young children below 18 years, children’s should be exposed to goal settings. First, they must be educated to plan for their activities. Over the period of time, based on their interested subject their goal has to be devised. They need to be properly guided on interrelated coherence among their interested subject, dream job and hobby. In the example given above students want to become a scientist but he has his favorite subject as history. Instead of choosing history we can suggest him or her to go for any science subject. Also the hobby could be brought in the line of dram job. For example, in addition to painting the child can develop everyday science experiments.
Based on the above input, the suggested combination is as follows:
Dream Job: Becoming a scientist
Favorite Subject: Science
Hobby: Everyday science experiment
Intermediate Goal setters: Persons who are college going especially when they enter in to colleges for their Under Graduation. These goal settlers fall under 19 to 25 age group.
In the second Scenario, a person wants to become a teacher, she has her favorite subject as science and she listens to music in leisure time. These goal setters are intermediate group. As said earlier they fall under 19 to 25 years age group. Most of them go college during this age group. This is the time when they choose to decide for themselves. Their way of life is formed by their own decision, to a maximum extent. During college times they are exposed more to job opportunities. Many will test and compare whether their childhood dreams, whether it still has a relevance.
After going through series of exposure these goal setter will redraw their goal post. Based on their strength and weaknesses they will fix new goal. Sometimes, during college time, more than one goals are being set. Here, while setting a goal, many do not get support or guidance form experienced persons. For example, a student could approach a professor and share his or her goals. Based on the input or suggestions given by the professor one can change or redraw their goal post.
In the example give above a person wants to become as a teacher, she has her favorite subject as Science and she listens to music. Do you see coherence in this? If Not, Can you suggest a change?
